Uphill but upbeat: Tom challenges rare genetic condition to become cycling champion

Meet Tom. Tom Staniford, British para-cycling champion, is one of only eight people in the world living with MDP syndrome. In 2011, at just 21 years old, Tom became the youngest ever solo cyclist to win the National Para-Cycling Circuit Race.

Tom has been wearing ReSound’s hearing aids since 2012, and in a recent interview with BBC Radio London, he talks about ReSound LiNX 3D’s “profound impact” on his cycling, as well as his day-to-day life.

ReSound’s Spatial Sense has made a huge difference to Tom when he’s cycling on the road, he says, because it not only allows him to hear cars coming up behind him, but also to hear when they are moving closer or further away.

Off-road, Tom benefits from ReSound LiNX 3D in his work as a freelance marketer and in his personal relationships with family and friends. Tom used to avoid speaking on the phone altogether, he says, but that all changed once he was able to connect his ReSound hearing aids to his iPhone wirelessly via Bluetooth.

Now, he receives calls directly to his hearing aids. “I can speak to my heart’s content on the phone, with clients, with family or whatever, which obviously has a huge impact on my relationships with people and the interpersonal connection that I have,” Tom says.

“They (ReSound) do such a fantastic job of providing technology that really is integrated into people’s lives, and is easy to adapt to and actually has a real benefit,” says Tom.
